Description

Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital is seeking a Phlebotomist for a PRN position.

Status: PRN

Position Goal: To insure that quality diagnostic services are provided to the patient population for health maintenance and/or improvement. Cooperate and coordinate activities with the laboratory staff, medical staff, other health care professionals, clinical affiliations, administration and other disciplines as necessary for the provision of quality patient care.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Answer phones and greets customers appropriately, treating them in a courteous manner.
  • Ensures all phlebotomy and specimens are collected accurately and labeled correctly in a timely manner according to established procedures, ensuring all collected specimens are received and verified in the LIS system.
  • Responsible for calling clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify tests ordered, obtain accurate billing information and diagnosis codes.
  • Accurately enters patient and test information into computer. Generates requisitions by entering tests ordered by provider. Checks for proper collection criteria before collecting samples.
  • Prepares samples for analysis by technologists/technicians. Places samples in centrifuge when appropriate. Communicates to technologists/technicians of specimens obtained for STATs and/or special handling.
  • Processes reference lab samples: Enters data correctly in reference lab computer. Follows specimen collection and handling instructions.
  • Ensures results printed are accurately distributed to providers and/or departments.
  • Notifies supervisor of any discrepancy in specimen collection process.
  • Maintains required records, logs and documentation
  • Reads, understands, and complies with departmental policies, protocols and procedures:  (i.e. Procedure Manuals, Safety manual, Compliance Manual, etc)
  • Helps research/test client information and packages specimens properly for reference lab send-outs.
  • Keep required certifications current; inform Lab Director and Human Resources of any changes or updates to certification status.
  • Performs clerical duties, (i.e. filing, faxing, data entry, patient record scanning)
  • Adheres to departmental dress code and lab coat policies, appearing neat and clean at all times
  • Communicates all unresolved problems to appropriate supervisor or technologist on duty.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean, disposes of biohazard material properly
  • Assists with inventory management, restocking supplies as necessary
  • Participates on teams and special projects when asked.
  • Checks pending log periodically and at the end of the shift to ensure all specimens have been collected, reporting to the technologist on duty for any specimen problems or delays.
  • Participates in competency assessments during probationary period and on an annual basis.
  • Participate in all applicable safety training sessions to include but not limited to fire drills, emergency preparedness drills, disaster drill.  Know the locations and contents of safety manuals, MSDS manuals, Emergency Disaster Kardex.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience: 1 year phlebotomy experience within a hospital preferred.  Experience with children and infants, preferred.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Completion of Phlebotomy Training Program preferred. Medical training and/or Medical terminology preferred.
Special Qualifications: ASCP or ASPT certification preferred.  Medical Assistant programs that incorporate Phlebotomy training may be substituted for Phlebotomy school training. Must be able to work in an independent manner with little or no supervision. BLS required.
