Description

Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital is seeking a Surgical Support Tech for a PRN position.

Shift: Varies including Saturdays

Position Goal:

Surgical Support Technicians facilitate the set up and break down of OR surgical rooms.  They sort and dispose contaminated materials per hospital guidelines.  SSTs are also responsible for patient transport to and from Surgery, providing comfort and report concerns as needed. 

Position Responsibilities:

NON PATIENT CARE DUTIES:

  • Facilitates obtaining and moving equipment necessary for different procedures. When working with equipment, care is taken to avoid damage to the equipment and self safety rules are followed.
  • Assists the surgical team by obtaining supplies not present in the room, for positioning aids and specimen transportation through the tube system or to a unit outside of the OR.
  • Able to efficiently and quickly assist in "turning" the surgical suite over between cases following OR policies and procedures.
  • Able to re-stock room supplies and restore order to the OR at the end of the days schedule.

PATIENT CARE DUTIES:

  • Transports patients to and from the OR as outlined on the skills list.
  • Provides comfort measures to patients during transportation. Reports any concerns verbalized by the patient during transport to the Charge RN.
  • Provides for patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Moves in and around sterile field without causing contamination.
  • Reports items of doubtful sterility to the appropriate personnel.
  • Demonstrates ability to follow Universal Precautions, wearing personal protective equipment, works safely, and treats instrument/equipment with respect.

PATIENT SAFETY

  • Coordinates with the Charge RN the identification of patients and selects appropriate mode of
    transportation, i.e. stretcher, bed, or any specific adaptations.
  • Knows the principles of sterile technique, how to move about the sterile field.
  • Provides assistance to anesthesia and the surgical team for all holding and position needs required for the patient.
  • Performs proper hand washing techniques.

HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES:

  • Is knowledgeable and follows all policies for cleaning & decontamination of the surgical suite and equipment as defined on the skills list.
  • Correctly sorts "clean" & "contaminated" trash after each procedure.
  • Correctly handles and processes all dirty linen, as well as getting the dirty linen.
  • Coordinates for trash removal with co-workers.
  • Maintains a clean & orderly environment.

PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT:

  • Attends all mandatory education programs.
  • Attends department in-services as appropriate.
  • Attends 50% of staff meetings and signs off meeting minutes including those not attended.
  • Assists in new staff orientation as assigned.
  • Takes responsibility for determining learning needs and seeks out opportunities
  • Maintains positive interdepartmental communication.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in the provision of patient care.
  • Completes and updates unit specific competency skills list annually.

 

GENERAL:

  • Flexible hours as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Experience: 6 months previous Hospital Experience preferred.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
Special Qualifications: CNA certification preferred
