Description

Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital is seeking a US/NST for a Full Time position.

Shift: 5:00AM-1:30PM EST

Position Goal: Under the direction of unit management, the Unit Secretary/Nurse Support Tech (US/NST) performs unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and protocols.  Functions include managing supplies, answering telephones.  Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), the US/NST performs patient care, respiratory functions and unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures.  The US/NST is expected to anticipate the needs of the patient within the scope of their practice.  The US/NST collects, reports, and documents patient data, and keeps the RN informed of pertinent changes in patient condition.  The US/NST also participates in orientation of new personnel as appropriate.

Position Responsibilities:

  • US/NST will participate in patient care by collecting, charting and recording patient data in a timely fashion according to hospital policy and keeping the RN informed of pertinent data.
  • US/NST transcribes physician orders in an accurate and timely fashion
  • Participates in the patient’s admission, transfer and/or discharge and facilitates rapid notification of Bed Control, Registration and Housekeeping.
  • Assists with unit orientation and continuing education of students and employees as appropriate.
  • Maintains an organized work environment (which may include files, supplies, equipment, etc.) to ensure easy access and physical professional appearance. 
  • Maintains optimal inventory supplies in an effort to enhance workflow efficiencies.
  • Provides secretarial support as appropriate which may include data entry, faxing, copying, scheduling, charting, routine, etc.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for own competency/mandatories and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal data up-to-date. 
  • Meets educational requirements for new equipment, materials, procedures and technology. 
  • Prepares for the performance evaluation conference by submitting completed skills list and education attendance documents one month prior to due date.
  • Performs any ancillary testing including but not limited to:  finger sticks and oxygen set-ups.
  • Completes all assigned tasks and communicates to the RN the patient responses to care provided in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Makes frequent patient rounds for fluids and toileting and keeps room clean, neat and maintains items within reach.  Pays extra attention to patients in high fall risk categories.
  • Understands and follows health standards related to risk management, safety and infection control.
  • Maintains patient chart: proper location, adequate forms, remove excess forms, correct order of forms at discharge.
  • Answers telephones in courteous, professional manner and accurately communicates messages.
  • Performs typing functions.
  • Performs data entry functions.
  • Electronically completes order entries.
  • Maintains manuals, logs, and bulletin boards 
  • Arranges/ provides patient transport and assists with errands.
  • Performs faxing and copying duties as needed.
  • Accurately files paperwork.
  • Maintains and assist staff with computer related equipment.
  • Courteously and promptly greets patients/visitors to the unit, escorts and orients patients to their room
  • Maintains patient records/files appropriately.
  • Accurately orders needed test for patients as ordered, in a timely fashion.
  • Assists the RN in locating test results not available on the chart.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Responds to any inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Reports and processes patient issues, equipment malfunctions, and safety hazards.
  • Facilitates communication in emergency situations.
  • Screens all incoming calls and re-routes appropriately.
  • Assists in calling in patients with any scheduling changes.
  • Uses proper BSI procedures, chemical safety and body mechanics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE GROWTH

  • Actively pursues appropriate certifications.
  • Attends and actively participates in unit in-services and/or workshops annually
  • Attends mandated in-services.
  • Applies acquired knowledge in patient care practice.
  • Attends 50% of department staff meetings, and signs minutes of meetings not attended.
  • Maintains up-to-date CPR, safety training, and TB testing.
  • Completes annual/critical competencies identified for assigned department.
  • Demonstrates awareness of changes and advances in field.
  • Takes responsibility for determining learning needs and seeks out learning opportunities

 

Experience: Hospital experience preferred. 
Education: High school graduate or equivalent required, CNA preferred
Special Qualifications: Knowledgeable in Medical Terminology preferred.  Knowledgeable in the Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word etc.).  Must possess excellent customer service skills in person and over the phone. Organizational skills required.  Current BLS required.
